Say What?

Conversation:

Sam: Hey dad, I was thinking about maybe playing soccer.
Me: Say what?
Sam: Soccer.
Me: Really? Why?! (Thinking to myself how I had failed as a father that my son wanted to play a sport where you use a ball, but you don't touch it with your hands)
Sam: Well, my friends play.
Me: And?
Sam: I think I would like it.
Me: Uh, OK then (This is gonna be a disaster)

We signed up...late. Yesterday we attended our first game. Sam had been to one scrimmage where he didn't play, he only watched. We prepped him to ONLY do what the coach said if he got in the game since our complete knowledge of soccer could fit in a thimble.

He played a lot.

He had great instincts for the game.

He was good.

Crow tastes a little like chicken.

I am pleased to hear about Sam's success in soccer, it is a great conditioning for Basketball. (Ha) Really, I think Soccer is a good fit for Sam. He has more freedom to just play and use his own ingenuity to disrupt things on defense. I think it is great.

After thinking about this overnight, I am a little concerned about Debbie. You know the only difference between a soccer mom and a pit bull is lipstick!!! I have seen her play blockus. She is a competitor.

Hey Grandpa, better be careful with those lipstick comments... they could get you into trouble these days! Yes, I am a competitor, but ignorant when it comes to the rules of soccer. You would be proud...I sit quietly in the stands and cheer when appropriate! I am saving my game face for Grandma and Rachel for a Thanksgiving Round of BLOKUS!

I went to a high school soccer game the other night. It ended in a 0-0 tie - and everyone was talking about great the game was.

Does that make ANY sense?

Maybe I just don't know enough about the game to appreciate it...

Jason,

Tony and I had a biology teacher who told the class he would give them 100% on their tests if they could get every single answer wrong.

It takes a lot of effort to get a
"0".

Maybe the crowd likes the "anticipation" of a goal as much as the actual goal.

Good for Sam. He's a Futboler now.

I hate soccer. But then you already knew that and you know the reasons why. But if anyone can bring redemption to that dreadful game, it's an Akers.

When your kid is playing it makes sense. Sam likes playing defense which pleases me and I know would please his Grandpa (A basketball coach who loves teaching defense).

It pleases his mamma to watch her boy play for an entire hour while he is constantly grinning from ear to ear! Who would have thought? Tell Rachel that he will take her on when we get home for Thanksgiving.
